A Bit Of History on the Cause

 

The Royal Children's Hospital, based in Parkville, Melbourne, Australia remains at the forefront of paediatric medicine.

The hospital has 311 beds, and treats approximately 25,000 in-patients each year. A total 280,000 children are treated by the hospital each year.

It has more than 1600 staff, and takes referrals from throughout Australia and the Asia-Pacific rim countries.
Some of the recent achievements include:

    * First discovery of rotavirus as the cause of gastroenteritis.
    * Australian National Centre for cardiac transplantation.
    * Leading centre for bone marrow and cord blood transplantation.
    * Australia's first gait laboratory for children.
    * Instituted world-wide changes in measles immunisation in children.
    * Leading Australian studies into childhood allergy.
    * World experts in paediatric anaesthetics.
    * Australia's most comprehensive care program for neonates and internationally recognised for work on ethical and legal aspects of newborn care, especially the use of high technology.
    * The development of a video EEG monitoring system, which is now used internationally and has been integrated with the best epilepsy surgical program in Australia.
    * Landmark longitudinal study of childhood asthma into adulthood.
